The Fence is a network across Europe and beyond for playwrights and cultural operators. The Fence network was launched by writernet in the UK with an international writers’ retreat at The Hurst, John Osborne’s old house and now an Arvon Centre in Shropshire in October 2003, and then as a Meeting Group at the Informal European Theatre Meeting (IETM) in Birmingham. Its aim is to grow a European network of playwrights and cultural operators to explore the practice of contemporary dramatic writing in many culturally diverse European contexts.
The Fence has grown as a network to over 100 playwrights and gatekeepers from over 25 countries via face-to-face encounters in Budapest, Graz, Belgrade, Tampere, Amsterdam/Utrecht, Graz, Leeds, Istanbul, Timisoara and Chemnitz.
Fence meetings typically contain the following elements
a) Playwrights and cultural operators from across Europe and beyond come together and meet each other
b) Hosts curate focused engagement with the domestic playwriting community which can be across the whole country or a portion of it.
c) we offer a wide range of professional development expertise from across the network to the hosts to precipitate engagement with b).
d) we make scratch work with and for each other as a practical way of making a) happen
In the process we explore the landscape where we are and learn about them from everywhere else. We document meetings and place the results on our website, where we create country profiles for anyone to access, using the knowledge of our participants and others
